What is Baicalin?
Baicalin is a flavone, which is a type of flavonoid that is isolated from the roots ofScutellariabaicalensis and Scutellarialateriflora.It is also present in other plants such asOroxylumindicum (Indian trumpet flower) and Thyme.
Baicalin is also know by other names such as; Chinese Skullcap, Huang Qin, Hooded Willow Herb, Mad Bark and Baikal.
Baicalin is a positive allosteric modulator in the benzodiazepine site of the GABA receptor. Studies show anxiolytic effects without sedation/myorelaxation. It is also an antagonist of the estrogen receptor (anti-estrogen).
It displays certain types of lipoxygenases and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Other studies have revealed potential anti-depressive effects.
Baicalin is an inhibitor of CYP2C9 that metabolizes drugs in the body.
Baicalin has a very long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. In the past, it was used as a tonic for longevity whilst promoting a healthy heart and mind. In modern medicine, Baicalin extracts are used as powerful dietary supplements.
