What is Pterostilbene?

Pterostilbene is an antioxidant found in foods such as blueberries, almonds, peanuts and grapes. It is chemically similar to resveratrol and has similar health benefits, although some believe it is even more powerful. Although certain food sources do contain pterostilbene, it is only ever present in very tiny amounts and so to achieve the required health benefits a supplement is necessary.

Side Effects

There can be some uncomfortable digestive side effects when you begin taking resveratrol but happily these don't appear to be present when using pterostilbene supplements. If you have used resveratrol in the past, then don't be put off by pterostilbene as your experience will not be the same. Even at very high levels pterostilbene does not show any signs of toxicity, however increased levels of LDL cholesterol have been noted. LDL cholesterol is the bad and therefore undesirable type of cholesterol. However, there are other supplements that can be taken in conjunction with pterostilbene to minimise the risk of this.

How does it work

Pterostilbene is a potent antioxidant. It binds to our PPAR receptors encouraging production of PPAR. PPAR is important in regulating our cholesterol and lipids and use of pterostilbene can help to promote good levels of triglycerides.

Adenosine triphosphate or ATP is the process in which our muscles use and store energy. It is a complex biochemical process, but essentially efficient ATP is crucial for bodybuilding, building endurance and undertaking tough workouts. Pterostilbene works to ensure an efficient ATP process. Studies have shown that athletes and bodybuilders are able to increase their muscle mass but not their body fat following supplementation with pterostilbene.

Pterostilbene encourages healthy blood sugar in the body. It can normalise blood sugar levels in people who have struggled with this previously.

The powerful antioxidant properties of pterostilbene can benefit the health of brain cells. It can promote better memory, improved motor function and cognitive abilities in those who have shown a deterioration.

Pterostilbene is even touted as an anti-aging product as it protects cells against oxidative stress which otherwise could prematurely age our bodies.
