What is Picamilon?
Picamilon is an excellent nootropic providing multiple benefits. Picamilon was first introduced in Soviet Union in 1969. It is a water-soluble, odorless and hygroscopic white crystalline powder. It is used for anxiety relief as well as for cognitive benefits.
Picamilon is a combination of two molecules, GABA and vitamin B3. GABA is a specific neurotransmitter which is known to improve relaxation of mind. People with depression and anxiety complaints usually have low levels of GABA. An adequate amount of GABA in the human brain is supposed to overcome depression and anxiety. GABA-rich supplements usually lack the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, a natural protection of the brain. As a result, the drug is unable to get into the brain, and thus imparts little efficacy in combating depression and anxiety.
How Picamilon works
The common solution to let GABA cross the blood-brain barrier is to combine supplements with a suitable carrier, usually vitamins or their derivatives. Vitamins like niacin (vitamin B3) for example have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, so they are a suitable carrier to transport GABA to the brain. Most carriers are characterized as being non-toxic and highly bioavailable (available to the body). Upon entering the brain, picamilon is hydrolyzed into its constituents; GABA and niacin. Thus providing sufficient supply of GABA to neurotransmitters and vitamins to the brain.
Effects of Picamilon
Picamilon provides two benefits to its users; anxiolytic benefits by virtue of GABA and vasodilatory benefits associated with niacin. Anxiolytic because it can benefit conditions of depression and anxiety while providing relaxation to the mind. Vasodilatory because blood vessels are dilated, which increases blood flow to the brain while increasing oxygen, glucose and other nutrient levels in the brain. It means that the overall brain functions are increased due to increased blood supply. So a higher level of concentration, alertness and mental power is achieved.
Studies on Picamilon
A study by the Russian government has established the efficacy of picamilon. It is an approved vasoactive nootropic (a cognitive enhancer raising capacity of blood vessels). A permit by a physician should be obtained when using any other medication, or when having undergone a major medical procedure recently. The ingestion of picamilon for patients with renal disorders or low blood pressure is debatable because picamilon lowers the blood pressure by dilating blood vessels to increase blood flow.
Side-Effects of Picamilon
Picamilon is considered safe compared to other GABA-rich supplements. Nonetheless few mild side effects are associated with administration of picamilon. These include headache, nausea, insomnia (sleeplessness), lightheadedness etc. Depending on medical condition, a physician’s visit is a must before taking picamilon.
