What is Phosphatidylserine
Phosphatidylserine or PS is being touted as the ‘must have’ bodybuilding supplement due to its ability to increase levels of testosterone and reduce cortisol in the body. If you're experiencing a lot of discomfort and soreness after a hard workout then this could be the supplement for you.
PS has been deemed safe even after long-term use but be aware that it can thin the blood so be careful what you were taking in conjunction with the supplement. The effects of PS are fast and noticeable, and you should begin to see the benefits within a week or two.
How does it work?
PS helps the body to rebalance hormones more effectively by producing more testosterone and less cortisol even after short periods of exercise. Phosphatidylserine is already found in our cell membranes but when we take it as a supplement it improves the body's stress resistance. It's not exactly clear why or how this happens but we do know for a fact that PS reduces the concentration of cortisol in our body following exercise or periods of stress.
Our cortisol to testosterone ratio is key to our ability to build lean muscle mass. In a control group the people that took PS increased their testosterone by 35% on average. They also decreased their cortisol by a similar amount. The ratio between the cortisol and testosterone was vastly improved.
PS has a number of benefits. Studies show that PS can improve mood during times of mental stress. Cortisol is a stress hormone so it makes sense that reducing cortisol levels is psychologically beneficial. PS also appears to improve brain function and memory as well as the ability to concentrate better.
High levels of cortisol whilst exercising can lead to overtraining or overreaching during training sessions. Cortisol reduction reduces the risk of doing this.
Excess cortisol can lead to weakness and atrophy of the muscles and a loss of bone mass, so reducing cortisol by using PS is therefore beneficial. High levels of cortisol can also cause body fat to be redistributed across the body, meaning that you can lose fat in your extremities and your muscle whilst your abdomen and face become fatter.
