What is Oxiracetam?
Oxiracetam is considered one of the best nootropic supplements from the racetam family. It is derived from piracetam with addition of a hydroxyl group to its molecule. This way, oxiracetam is slightly more potent than its parent piracetam. Oxiracetam is water-soluble, and does not have a bad taste which is usually an undesirable property of other racetams. So it can be taken with a glass of water or juice, just like many other dietary supplements.
Effects of Oxiracetam
Oxiracetam is absorbed very well by the gastrointestinal tract after its oral intake. Together with its higher bioavailability, the maximum quantity of the drug remains available to the body and facilitates in neuro-transmissions within the brain. Oxiracetam is considered ampakine, which in turn is currently being investigated in conjunction with potential treatment of a range of conditions involving mental disability and disturbances. Moreover, it is termed as a pure cognition enhancer which have literally no effects for depression and anxiety. By influencing the production of certain neuro-transmitters, oxiracetam is known to improve learning, memory and recall capabilities.
How does Oxiracetam work?
Oxiracetam shares most mechanisms and benefits with other racetam nootropics. While other racetams present sedative effects, oxiracetam can have stimulating effects. Some people term it as a “speedy racetam” due to its mechanism. Although the quality of sleep is not reported to be affected by use of oxiracetam, the time required to get into sleeping may be increased due to its stimulating effect.
Studies on Oxiracetam
Oxiracetam has been undergone a lot of research on rats, mice and humans. Although no significant benefits are reported for mental diseases like dementia or Alzheimer’s disorder, it has shown to help against cognitive decline. Oxiracetam allegedly improves focus, memory and learning in logical, spatial and contextual dimensions. Moreover, it is reported by few investigators that oxiracetam is capable of neuro-protection and repairing of neuro-damage due to alcohol consumption. In short, oxiracetam helps its users in multiple pathways; cognitive as well as neuro-protective.
Recommended Dosage / Usage Instructions
Due to its stimulating effect, the users of oxiracetam are instructed to maintain a high choline level by eating choline-rich foods, like fish, eggs, meat, oats etc. Oxiracetam can also be combined with other nootropic drugs (e.g. racetams) depending on personal condition and requirements. It is recommended to consult a physician for optimum dosage, suggested food, and combining with other drugs. Limited data on the use of drug by pregnant or lactating women exists, so special caution should be taken.
Side-Effects of Oxiracetam
In contrast to other nootropics, oxiracetam is considered safe for consumption in moderate high dosages, even for a prolonged schedule. No reports exist addiction or withdrawal issues. Few mild side effects are similar to those of other racetams, like headache, insomnia (sleeplessness), nausea, stomach distress etc. When lacking choline or taking higher dosages, users are considered to be more prone to side effect. However, all the above mentioned benefits and risks may differ for each individual.
