5-HTP is metabolized by the liver and released into blood as serotonin. Although present in some types of bananas or commercially obtained from the African Black Bean, usually a human diet contains little L-Tryptophan and almost no 5-HTP. The body is therefore dependent on 5-HTP in order to synthesize more serotonin.
It is believed that higher levels of serotonin can alleviate depression and brighten up mood. 5-HTP is used to synthesize serotonin and therefore melatonin. So 5-HTP is assumed to have mood improving and soothing effects and may benefit weight loss.
5-HTP is often given to spiders by silk farmers in order to stimulate the production of stronger silk.
